MAIN AREAS OF EXPERTISE
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization And Reprocessing) Therapy
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy is an integrative psychotherapy approach that has been extensively researched and proven effective for treating trauma. EMDR combines standardized protocols with elements from various therapeutic approaches to help patients process deeply entrenched traumatic memories.
Originally developed for PTSD, EMDR has also shown significant efficacy in treating a variety of conditions including:
Panic Attacks
Complicated Grief
Disturbing Memories
Phobias
Pain Disorders
Performance Anxiety
Stress Reduction
Sexual and Physical Abuse
Personality Disorders
Exposure and Response Prevention therapy is a sub category of Cognitive Behavoural Therapy (CBT). It is a very specific therapy in which I guide my clients through different exposures regarding their anxieties or fears. This is not a therapy where we just jump into our worst fears, rather, I collaborate with my clients to create a exposure hierarchy and we begin to gradually allow clients to habituate to new situations in their lives.
This allows clients to learn new ways of living as well as learning to cope with feelings such as anxiety. The response prevention piece of this therapy involves identifying safety behaviours or compulsions that we have created in order to keep us safe.
In reality these behaviours and compulsions only serve to increase our anxiety in the future. Response prevention allows us to stop these behaviours and be fully engaged in life.
Exposure and Response Prevention therapy is one of the main treatments for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and is also useful with social anxiety and other anxieties as well.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy or CBT is a problem-focused form of treatment that helps people see the difference between beliefs, thoughts, and feelings, and free them from unhelpful patterns.CBT is grounded in the belief that it is a person’s perception of events – rather than the events themselves – that determines how he or she will feel and act in response.CBT can help with:
Depression
Anxiety
Panic attacks
Phobias
Obsessive compulsive disorders (OCD)
Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
Anger management issues
Most people with clearly defined behavioral and emotional concerns tend to reap the benefits of CBT. If any of the above issues resonate with you, I encourage you to try cognitive behavioral therapy.
